Qur'an 67:2 Al-Mulk
[He] who created death and life to test you [as to] which of you is best in deed - and He is the Exalted in Might, the Forgiving -

What it says
Death is named first, and both death and life are objects of the verb created, so neither is a bare absence. Bala is to test by putting under strain, the way a metal is assayed, and what the test is looking for is named exactly: not the most deeds but the best. The two names at the close hold the test between them, one who cannot be overcome and one who covers over.
