Qur'an 67:10 Al-Mulk

And they will say, "If only we had been listening or reasoning, we would not be among the companions of the Blaze."

What it says

Two faculties are named and both are given up as unused: taking a thing on report and working it out for oneself. Sama' here is not the ear functioning but attention paid to what was said. The sentence is a conditional in the past, the form Arabic uses for a condition that can no longer be met.
