Qur'an 59:9 Al-Hashr

And [also for] those who were settled in al-Madinah and [adopted] the faith before them. They love those who emigrated to them and find not any want in their breasts of what the emigrants were given but give [them] preference over themselves, even though they are in privation. And whoever is protected from the stinginess of his soul - it is those who will be the successful.

What it says

This is the Ansar, the Medinans who had already made the city their home and held faith before the emigrants arrived. Their description moves through love of the newcomers, no resentment at what the newcomers were given, and preference for them over themselves even while in need. The verse ends on a general principle detached from the historical scene: whoever is spared his own soul's stinginess is among those who succeed.
